Behind the Scenes of Mind The Gap

Red Robin Films recently wrapped production on Mind The Gap, a daring new drama shot over three packed days in and around Bermondsey. Written and directed by first-time directed Sinan Barut and lensed by DoP Hal Pilkington, the film blends the aesthetics of documentary and arthouse cinema to tell a story that’s both unsettling and deeply human.

The narrative follows an ambitious indie documentary crew who exploit the grief of those closest to a railway death in their pursuit of success. The film explores questions of morality, ambition, and empathy through a unique hybrid style that blurs the line between fact and fiction.

Performances anchor the film, with standout turns from Ian Champion (The Father), Ryan Kerr (The Son), Jack Hyland (Documentary Director), Richard D Myers (The Coroner), and Chris Newstead (The Investigator). Their portrayals give the story a raw immediacy, capturing both the emotional devastation of tragedy and the opportunism lurking in its wake.

The shoot itself was a feat of coordination. On Day 2, a 20+ person unit navigated four major location moves between interiors and exteriors, with Gaffer Sasha Hunter, Best Boy Mats Kastellet, and Production Designer Anna Abdullaeva holding down base to light and dress sets while the main unit pressed on. Sunday brought fresh challenges, including a two-hour window to shoot at the atmospheric Old Justice pub. To maximize time, the art department was split across locations, ensuring each set was camera-ready as the crew arrived.

Red Robin Films were brought on by Sinan Barut to bring this challenging story to life. Mind The Gap is produced by Kieran Lowley, Isobel Drane (Producers), Sinan Barut, Ceren Yelcin (Executive Producers), Richard Landy and Arjun Pala (Associate Producers), and is now in post-production. With its bold visual language and uncompromising themes, the film promises to provoke, challenge, and linger long after the credits roll.
